Staff Orientation & Competency Plan

The Nursing Orientation Program at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital is intended to fully introduce nurses to our culture, environment and values for the purpose of providing excellent patient care that consistently exceeds quality standards.  As a result, orientation takes place in several stages:

  1. General Orientation.  Executive team welcomes all new hires, introduces them to our unique organizational culture and provides an overview of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.

  2. Patient Care Services Orientation.  RNs and clinical technicians are required to complete this orientation.

  3. Unit-based Orientation.  This individualized training is constructed based on prior experience and knowledge base.  It is guided by a primary Unit Preceptor who best meets the needs and attributes of the new hires.  This "on-boarding" process assures a successful orientation to the unit.

All orientation processes are coordinated by the Unit Manager and Director, Unit Preceptor, Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) and Nursing Education in collaboration with the new hire.

Clinical Competencies

RNs and clinical technicians demonstrate competencies on a regular basis.  Various competencies are demonstrated annually and/or as warranted depending on competency issues and regulatory agencies.  Special competencies are required if the issue is related to new technology, high-risk procedures, low-volume protocols or any particular issue that needs to be solved.
