Sleep Disorders
Lake Forest Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Lab helps ensure men with short-term or longer-term sleep disorders get a good night’s sleep. Each year, as many as 40 million Americans may not get the recommended amount of sleep: typically eight hours per night. For many people, sleeping problems are an occasional nuisance, but for some it’s a daily (or nightly) challenge.
At least 84 different types of sleep disorders lead to a lowered quality of life, reduced personal health and endangerment of public safety. One of the most common and serious sleep disorders, sleep apnea, is potentially life threatening. It can lead to daytime sleepiness as well as high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke if not addressed. Sleep apnea is much more common in men than in women, and often is associated with pronounced snoring. Other common sleep disorders include insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep) and narcolepsy (daytime drowsiness).
If you believe you might have a sleep disorder, you should see your doctor, who may suggest a visit to the Sleep Disorders Lab at Lake Forest Hospital. Our sleep lab offers a variety of tests for diagnosing most sleep disorders, including an EEG. Conducted in a comfortable, bedroom-like setting, the EEG measures and records bodily functions such as breathing rate, heart rate and brain activity while during sleep. After the sleep study, the sleep physician will make recommendations to your primary physician. Treatment may include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), medication, weight loss, sleep pattern changes, dental appliances, or surgery. Referral from a physician is required for testing in the sleep lab. For appointment scheduling or additional information, please call (847) 535-6189.
