Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that men or women can get from having sex with anyone who has the infection. STDs can be spread through contact with an infected person’s blood or skin. The causes of STDs are bacteria, parasites and viruses. There are more than 20 types of STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes simplex, HIV/AIDS, human papilloma virus (HPV), genital warts, syphilis and trichomoniasis.

Sexually transmitted diseases often escape early diagnosis in men because the early symptoms are barely noticeable. Fortunately, most STDs managed with antibiotics or medication, but early diagnosis is the best first step. Most chronic STDs like herpes or HIV may be controllable, but cannot be cured. Correct usage of latex condoms greatly reduces, but does not completely eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading STDs.

Men should consult with their doctor about any unusual symptoms in the genital area, such as burning during urination, itching, discharge, sores, swelling and tenderness. For herpes and some other conditions, sores may appear around the mouth. Men infected with HIV may feel flu-like symptoms a few weeks after exposure, but often have no noticeable early symptoms.  Early treatment is the best way to manage any STD, and to lessen the likelihood of spreading the disease to someone else.
