Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Grayslake commended for exceptional breast care capabilities
Lake Forest, Ill. -- Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital received two prestigious designations for its breast imaging facilities and its overall breast care.
The hospital was awarded the American College of Radiology (ACR) Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Accreditation. In addition, the hospital and Northwestern Grayslake were given a full three-year accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). These designations confirm that the organization’s breast care program is among highest caliber in the country.
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital is the first facility in Lake County and one of only two facilities in the state of Illinois to earn the American College of Radiology’s MRI designation. There are only 141 hospitals in the country that are ACR MRI certified.
“Imaging plays a key role in successfully diagnosing and treating our breast cancer patients. Our patients should feel comfortable knowing that we provide the highest quality of care in a state-of-the-art facility,” said Michelle Lee, MD, Co-Director of the Department of Breast Imaging. “Our patients are our top priority, and we are always striving to improve the care that we provide them.”
Peer-review evaluations were conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists to determine the accreditation. The distinction is given for high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
“Earning the accreditation was a very rigorous process,” said Lisa Miller, MD, Co-Director of the Department of Breast Imaging. “We have proven that we are a first-rate breast center with the utmost attention to detail in all aspects of our care.”
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Grayslake were designated as ACR Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence in 2010, which recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in the ACR’s various breast care programs, including mammography, biopsy and ultrasound. The designation rounds out the hospital’s comprehensive accreditations, adding to the foundation of overall quality care recognition.
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital was also granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons that recognizes breast care centers for their voluntary commitment to providing the highest level of quality breast care.
The two breast care centers completed a rigorous evaluation and review process that monitored treatment of a complete spectrum of breast care issues. Evaluation standards included leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Grayslake both offer comprehensive breast care services. The hospital also offers women’s imaging at five additional satellite locations in Bannockburn, Glenview, Gurnee-Brookside, Gurnee-Tower Court, and Vernon Hills. One hundred women’s imaging patients visit the facilities each day and are treated with the most advanced technology and top-rated physicians.
The American College of Radiology, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 32,000 physicians. The ACR has served as the most widely recognized medical imaging accrediting body for more than 20 years, setting the industry’s standards for excellence. Its programs focus on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
The NAPBC is an association of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. Its mission is pursued through setting high industry standards of patient and professional education. Its board membership includes professionals from 15 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.
