Women’s Health Advisory Council Speaker Series Addresses “The Price of Privilege”

Lake Forest, Il. – Recognized author and psychologist Madeline Levine, Ph.D., visited Lake Forest in April to speak at this year’s Women’s Health Advisory Council Speakers Series event. Dr. Levine delivered a riveting and relevant presentation to a crowd of 150 at the Gorton Community Center, discussing the premise of her book, “The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids.” According to Dr. Levine, a privileged life isn’t always a happy one.

Throughout her presentation, Dr. Levine injected details pertinent to the audience. She shared that 22 percent of adolescents in affluent communities are depressed, compared with as little as 8 percent of adolescents in the general population. Some kids are over-programmed with activities and sports, she said. This not only increases their stress levels, but also negatively impacts their concepts of nurturing relationships.

“Dr. Levine’s presentation was very well-received and is clearly relevant to the challenges we face with parenting in our community,” said co-chair Liz Lincoln. “She provided many ‘pearls of wisdom’ on ways we can guide our children through these difficult years.” Jennifer Margolis and Alison Kohlmeyer also co-chaired the event.

A question and answer session, as well as a book signing, followed Dr. Levine’s presentation. Her presentation left many wanting to learn more; dozens of attendees purchased her book.

The Women’s Health Advisory Council of Lake Forest Hospital organizes its annual Speaker Series around relevant health and wellness topics. This was its fourth year.

Arrangements for the appearance of Madeline Levine made through HarperCollins Speakers Bureau, NY, NY.
