Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital receives touching donation from local high school
Lake Forest, IL. – Lake Forest High School students raised breast cancer awareness – and $1,300 – to benefit the Posy Krehbiel Breast Care Center at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.
Junior Class President Emma Faucher spearheaded the effort. “So many of my close friends have had friends or family members who have been affected by breast cancer,” she said. “The disease is too common, and we wanted to do our part to change that.”
The students did “their part” in their own community. Rather than donating to a large national organization, Faucher and the Student Council donated to the hospital that provides care for their mothers, sisters and neighbors – Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.
To raise money, the students sold more than 400 pink breast cancer awareness T-shirts during a week in February. The week culminated with a Friday night basketball game followed by a dance. Lake Forest High School students and parents all wore pink to the basketball game, and proceeds from the dance also went to the hospital.
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital was thrilled with the donation. In early March, Nurse Navigator Jennifer Tepper met with Faucher, fellow student Lauren Ganshirt and LFHS Executive Board President John Nedeau to accept the donation. Nurse navigators are part of a unique hospital program that guides women during their breast cancer journey, from their diagnosis through completion of their treatment.
Lake Forest High School Dean and Student Council Advisor Laura Clegg couldn’t be more proud of her students. “The students took on an extra project at one of the busiest times of the year,” she said.
Faucher hopes to make this a yearly event. “I’d love to improve upon this next year,” she said. “With more time and more volunteers, who knows what we could do.”
The Posy Krehbiel Breast Care Center is located in the Hunter Family Center for Women’s Health, which opened in 2004. It offers women the most advanced technology in breast care, including digital mammography and CADx, a sophisticated computer-aided review of mammograms.
