Post C-section Early Exercise Program
One of every five births in the U.S. is performed via Cesarean section (C-section). Though relatively low risk, C-section is major abdominal surgery and may entail more discomfort, longer recovery and difficulty returning to normal activity.
The Post C-section Early Exercise Program, created in consultation with Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital OB/GYN physicians, uses gentle exercise and movement designed to reduce post-surgical pain and adhesions, prevent faulty posture, improve pelvic floor function and strengthen abdominal muscles.
The Early Exercise Program will help you get into pre-pregnancy shape and child-rearing condition with minimal difficulty. Intended for the six weeks immediately following C-section delivery, our physical therapists actually begin working with you shortly following your delivery. Patients who have scheduled a C-section can also be seen on an outpatient basis prior to delivery.
Your doctor will let you know at your post partum check-up (six to eight weeks after delivery) when it is safe to return to your regular exercise routine, and you should make the transition gradually.
For a therapy appointment at any Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital location, please call Central Scheduling at (847) 535-8000. Please email any questions you have to physicaltherapy@lfh.org.
