Mental Health

While the focus is often on the physical effects of illness and injury, a trauma, diagnosis or health crisis can also impact men and their families emotionally and spiritually. We at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital believe that living well is about being healthy in body, mind and soul. Seeking emotional and spiritual help as well as physical healing is an important part of a complete recovery or coping strategy for patients and their families.

At Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, compassionate caregivers offer patients and their families healing through counseling, education and support groups. We also have two chapels in the hospital for private worship. Members of our pastoral care staff are available to assist or counsel individuals from any religious tradition.

In addition to providing emotional and spiritual support in times of illness or health challenges, Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital offers treatment for short- or longer-term emotional issues, such as depression. Depression is more common than many people realize – affecting an estimated 20 million Americans at some point in their lifetimes. For men, depression can be difficult to recognize because its symptoms are different than women’s symptoms. Instead of sadness, male depression may show as anger, restlessness, frustration, a craving for control, inability to sleep, or overuse of distractions such as alcohol, TV, sports or sex, and a reluctance to seek help. Male depression also may show through physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive problems or sexual dysfunction.

Mental health specialists at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital understand how depression affects men, and are skilled at helping men cope with emotional issues.
