Digital Mammography

Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital has invested significant resources in creating the area's first all-digital mammography department, which has since expanded to six of its locations.  Digital mammography provides images of the breast tissue without the use of X-ray films—which makes them faster, more accurate and easier to share with consulting physicians.

At Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Diagnostic Imaging Centers, we offer two basic types of mammograms.  Both are performed with CAD, or computer-aided detection, commonly known as "digital" technology.

  1. Screening Mammogram, where two standard views of each breast are taken.
  2. Diagnostic Mammogram, where additional views are utilized if there is a symptom, family history or finding on a screening mammogram.

How is a Screening Mammogram performed?

Mammography can detect lumps too small or too deep to feel.  During the procedure, an X-ray machine sends a small amount of radiation through your breasts to produce images that are later examined.

How is a Diagnostic Mammogram performed?

The goal of diagnostic mammography is to pinpoint the exact size and location of a breast abnormality and to image the surrounding tissue and lymph nodes.

In many cases, diagnostic mammography will help indicate if the abnormality is benign, or non-cancerous.  However, if an abnormality is suspicious, additional breast imaging — such as a Breast MRI or Breast Ultrasound — or a biopsy may be ordered.  A biopsy is the only definitive way to determine whether a person has breast cancer.

How do I prepare for a Mammogram?

If you are a woman, your mammogram should be scheduled after your period.  You should perform a monthly self breast exam and have an annual clinical breast exam performed by your gynecologist or primary care physician.

On the day of your procedure, do not wear any deodorant, talcum powder or lotion in the breast or underarm area.  Please bring any prior mammography films you may have and give them to the technologists before your study begins.

Tell the technologist if you have implants or any pain, lumps or nipple discharge.  As with all radiological procedures, you should inform the technologist if you may be pregnant or if you are nursing.
