Diabetes Education Program
Diabetes affects 25.8 million adults and children in the United States, or 8.3% of the population, according to the American Diabetes Association. An additional 79 million people have prediabetes, which means that their blood glucose levels are higher than normal and could be causing long-term damage to the body. Diabetes can lead to many health complications—including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system damage and more.
Being educated on how to live with diabetes empowers you to manage the disease properly. Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s accredited outpatient Diabetes Education Program provides comprehensive education and training on diabetes for men, women and children. We focus on both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, gestational (during pregnancy) and pre-conception diabetes.
We offer one-on-one counseling that covers nutrition, glucose monitoring and lifestyle management. Our certified diabetes educators (CDE) and registered dietitians provide a compassionate environment for learning, along with accountability that promotes success in achieving your goals. Most importantly, we work with you to develop a plan that fits your age, body type and way of life.
In 2010, the Northwestern Lake Forest program was the first in Illinois to receive recognition from the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the gold standard in Diabetes Education.
Office visits for diabetes education are available in Lake Forest. A physician’s order is recommended. For more information, please contact Nutrition Services at 847.535.6176—or, to schedule an appointment, call 847.535.8000.
