Nephrology (Kidney)
Kidney disease can occur in women in a variety of ways. Women with diabetes, or high blood pressure that could lead to diabetes, are most at risk for developing kidney disorders. Women who are pregnant and who contract gestational diabetes are also vulnerable. Diseases in other areas of the body—like heart disease—can also trigger an unexpected kidney problem or failure.
The job of the kidneys is to regulate and filter the body’s fluids. When something disrupts this function, such as a urinary tract blockage or infection, cancer or kidney stone, immediate attention is needed to prevent a potential life-threatening event.
Nephrologists at Lake Forest Hospital focus on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases including electrolyte disturbances and hypertension. We also care for diabetics requiring renal replacement therapy, including dialysis. Many diseases affecting the kidney are not limited to the organ itself, but are systemic disorders, such as lupus, that require a holistic and individualized treatment approach.
For diabetics, Lake Forest Hospital offers a full range of services for assessing, treating and living with both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. For additional information, please visit our Diabetes section.
We offer a variety of appointment times to best fit our patient's busy schedules. Please call to determine the best appointment time for you.
