Dancer's Maintenance Program
New physical therapy program aims to keep your dancer dancing
Professional dance companies employ physical therapists to treat and maintain the health of their dancers—which is why Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital's Rehabilitative Services developed the Dancer's Maintenance Program.
As a former professional dancer and now a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Jacie Kuchan, PT, DPT, CLT will assess the root cause of dance-related pain and coordinate your care with your physician. Our goals are to assess and treat dance-related injuries and their causes, plus distinguish between injuries and the "normal pain" of being a dancer in order to keep your healthy dancer dancing.
Typical areas of pain for dancers include the foot and ankle, hip and knee, back and neck, shoulder or hand and elbow. Symptoms can include:
- Pain and muscle soreness
- Limping or compensation
- Persistent pain in the same area
If your dancer experiences these symptoms, we will perform an accurate assessment combined with education and professional experience for the proper treatment. Our tailored treatment plans address a variety of problems, whether it is specific event injuries, overuse injuries or pain, bio-mechanical alignment issues, strength or flexibility.
The Dancer's Maintenance Program includes:
- Cross-training techniques that support the dancer's body
- Managing the "normal pain" of being a dancer
- Managing injuries if they occur
- Techniques to keep the dancer's body healthy so dance will be enjoyed for years to come
Dancers of all ages and dance styles are welcome to contact Jacie for a screening, or obtain a physician referral for a full injury evaluation.
