Becoming a Blood or Organ Donor
Donating Blood—Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital relies largely on carefully screened, voluntary blood donors to maintain its blood supplies. Rest assured that we conduct extensive testing to ensure that all donated blood is safe for patients.
Whenever possible, we encourage autologous blood transfusions (blood that is taken from the patient and later reinfused, if needed) for surgical patients. If this procedure is not possible, family members whose blood type is compatible with the patient’s may donate blood for the patient’s use, should they need it.
Become an Organ/Tissue Donor—Organ and tissue donation is a very personal issue, one that can make the difference between life and death for other patients. Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital encourages patients to discuss this issue with their families and with their health care team. For further information on organ donation, please visit www.lifegoeson.com, the official Illinois Secretary of State website that details how the program works.
