Hearing loss can occur at any age, but our risk increases as we age. It’s also a problem that affects men more than women. Surprisingly, it’s a condition that people often ignore, even if it interferes with their ability to communicate. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) estimates that only one in five people who could benefit from a hearing aid wear one. At Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s Audiology Department, we customize evaluations, treatments and services to match each man’s specific hearing needs and unique situation.
Hearing loss is just one of several types of problems that can affect the ears and one’s ability to hear. The Audiology Department also evaluates and treats patients suffering from dizziness and balance disorders due to Ménière’s disease or other factors, as well as tinnitus (sometimes described as a constant ringing in the ears). More than 10 percent of men ages 65 to 74 are affected by tinnitus, and approximately 50 percent of all people affected by tinnitus also suffer from hearing loss and/or hyperacusis (oversensitivity to noise).
