Hearing loss is a common birth defect and it can often be the reason hearing problems emerge later on in childhood (as reported by the Nemours Foundation’s Center for Children’s Health Media). The foundation also states that 1 to 3 of every 1,000 babies born have some degree of hearing loss. Causes range from trauma, infection, exposure to a loud noise, reaction to certain childhood medications or family history.
